Mayborn Baby & Child is aware of the recent reports regarding concerns over Polycarbonate and an ingredient called Bisphenol A (BPA) including the recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on 16th September 2008.
Polycarbonate is used in many household items and baby products and has been for over 40 years. This widespread use is due to the exceptional combination of properties that the material gives, including safety, toughness, durability, lightweight, glass-like appearance, and suitability to all common household methods of sterilisation. Over the past decades, BPA has been subjected to extensive investigation into potential health effects. These extensive, detailed studies have been undertaken by United States Food and Drugs Administration, the United Kingdom / Japanese / Dutch Governments, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA)1 and more recently (January 2007) The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)2 along with numerous other studies and papers.
In fact, a recent EFSA press statement (23rd July 2008)3 ireconfirmed their position that the level of BPA found in Polycarbonate products is safe for humans and babies. The statement was released after EFSA reviewed and took note of all the recent activity on BPA research including the Canadian Government's Draft Screening Assessment, the US National Toxicology Program, European Commission's Joint Research Centre (EC, 2008) and the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM, 2008).
