Sterilising Baby Feeding Equipment

Electronic, Microwave and Cold Water sterilisers – what’s the difference?

Whatever method of feeding you choose, breastfeeding or bottle, you are going to need a steriliser. The Department of Health recommends that you sterilise all your baby feeding equipment before use for the first 12 months. This includes bottles and teats, breast pump, weaning spoons, cups and bowls.

Closer to Nature® Single Bottle Travel SteriliserA unique single bottle steriliser to help you follow the one bottle at a time guidelines* to give your baby a fresh feed every time. Use home or away, either in the microwave or as a cold water steriliser. Small enough to pack in a changing bag, compact enough to stay in your microwave, safe to use any time, anywhere.

Electronic Steam – an easy to use home steriliser. Simply place washed items and clean water in the unit, plug in and switch on. The water is then heated until it creates enough steam to kill off any bacteria. The sterilising process takes around 5 minutes.

Microwave Steam – this works in exactly the same way as the electronic steriliser except you pop the steriliser in the microwave. Takes between 4 – 8 minutes depending on the power of the microwave. Remember your microwave must be big enough to hold the steriliser.

Cold Water – this is really useful when you’re away from home. Sterilising tablets or fluid (such as Milton) are dissolved in cold water to create a bacteria-killing solution. Items are simply left to soak for at least 30 minutes. The water can be re-used several times over 24 hours.

The Tommee Tippee range includes two sterilisers which give you a choice of all three sterilising methods. Both give top performance as well as giving a host of extra features which make them particularly easy to use.
