Weaning

How do I get my baby to drink from a cup?

Training a baby to drink from a cup is a gradual process and can be quite messy at first.

The best type of cup for baby, in terms of both learning to drink and maintaining healthy oral development, is a free flowing one with no valves in it. The fluid will come out quickly, but that is part of the learning process.  Be patient – he will soon get the hang of it.

Try the cup at the same time every day, say tea time, and preferably with water in it.  A little routine is good at this age, but nothing too strict.  Try to give it to baby when he is not desperately hungry, and try to make it a happy affair. If baby doesn’t take to it straight away or gets distressed, stop and try again the next day.  Don’t worry - just keep building it up over time and try and stay calm and relaxed.
