Perfect Prep Day & Night FAQ’s
Find some answers to the most frequently asked questions about your Perfect Prep Day & Night Machine.
HOW DOES THE PERFECT PREP DAY & NIGHT MACHINE WORK?
The Perfect Prep Day & Night automatically controls the quality, volume and temperature of water in making up a formula feed. Once the water is in the hopper it passes through a unique filter to remove bacteria and other impurities in the water. The anti-bacterial filtration membrane inside has openings that are smaller than bacteria, creating a physical barrier. Once the water is filtered, the machine is ready to make up the feed. It starts with a ‘hot shot’ of over 70°C to kill bacteria which may be in the formula powder and completes the feed by dispensing the correct amount of water to deliver the right volume of feed at body temperature.
DOES THE PERFECT PREP MACHINE ADHERE TO NHS/WHO GUIDELINES?
The Perfect Prep Day & Night machine is designed to achieve the same result as following the NHS/World Health Organisation guidelines. The World Health Organisation guidelines were designed for making up a feed without a Perfect Prep machine and state that boiled water, which has cooled for no more than 30-minutes, should be used. The Perfect Prep Day & Night machine is designed to produce the same safe formula feed, but in a much quicker and more convenient way (in just 2 minutes). This saves time for parents and frustration for baby, without compromising on safety.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE PERFECT PREP DAY & NIGHT AND THE PERFECT PREP MACHINE?
The Perfect Prep Day & Night has a modern sleek design combined with lights to support the making of a feed whether it’s day or night time, along with a digital screen which provides built-in guidelines for the user, including a volume control function, where you can actually mute the machine volume altogether.
Although we’ve slightly amended some of the instructions that accompany the machine, the functionality of the machine is very similar, with the ultimate aim of preparing a feed within 2-minutes.
WHY DO YOU PUT THE FORMULA IN FIRST WITH THE PERFECT PREP DAY & NIGHT COMPARED TO THE PERFECT PREP AND NHS/WHO GUIDELINES?
Since launching the Perfect Prep Machine, we’ve received feedback that the steam from the machine causes the formula to stick to the spoon when adding multiple scoops.
NHS and WHO guidelines advise measuring the volume of water before adding the formula to ensure an accurate feed. However, as the Perfect Prep measures the exact volume for you, this is not necessary.
WHY ARE THE CLEANING GUIDELINES DIFFERENT TO THE PERFECT PREP MACHINE?
The purpose of introducing the additional step to our cleaning guidelines, where you first use a sterilising solution or food grade white vinegar, followed by a flush of boiling water, were introduced to give parents further peace of mind. Allowing a further ‘deep clean’ to be carried out.
Boiling water alone is however enough to clean the machine, as long as the cleaning frequency guidelines are followed. As with any other method of making up a feed, it’s essential that good hygiene practices are observed in the use and maintenance of your Perfect Prep Day & Night machine. Ensure your hands and all surfaces that come in to contact with the machine and its components are clean, and that the machine is away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Our guidelines for frequency of cleaning are as follows and rest assured that the machine will prompt you to clean the machine in those marked with *:
- Clean on set-up*
- Clean every 4-weeks
- Clean when changing the filter*
- Clean if the machine is not used for a period of a week or more
HOW DO I CLEAN MY PERFECT PREP DAY & NIGHT?
Essentially, all you need to do is follow the directions on screen, using boiling water.
You’ll be prompted to clean your machine at the time of setting up for the first time and every time you change your filter.
You are also advised to clean your machine every 4-weeks or if it hasn’t been used for a week or more and be sure to have clean hands and surfaces when cleaning and using your machine.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO USE A MUG FOR USE WITH THE MACHINE?
The simple answer is because a mug is readily available in most kitchens, it fits well under the dispenser and it’s the perfect thing for safely transferring water between the machine and the sink, as you flush it through.
WHY DOES YOUR NEW FILTER HAVE A COLOURED TOP – CAN THIS BE USED WITH BOTH PERFECT PREP MACHINES?
We have great news…… Yes, our Tommee Tippee filter can be used in both Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep machines.
The blue cap has been added to better distinguish our filter from other standard filters, making sure users know that they’re using the correct one. It’s really important to only use the Tommee Tippee Filter as it has a unique anti-bacterial filtration membrane inside which has openings that are smaller than bacteria, creating a physical barrier.
WHY DO I NEED TO SUBMERGE THE FILTER BEFORE USE?
Submerging the filter before use ensures that any air bubbles or loose particles within the filter are removed prior to use. If bubbles remain, it could affect the operation of the machine. Submerging should only take a minute or so.
Once you place the filter into the machine, use the first bottle cycle without adding formula as a final flush to complete this process. Once complete, you’re ready to go. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, feel free to contact us to chat more.
WHAT DOES THE HOT SHOT DO?
The hot shot is a key feature of the Perfect Prep as it not only helps to dissolve the formula powder quickly and easily, it also kills bacteria which may be present in the formula itself. The water dispensed in the hot shot is at a temperature of over 70C.
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO KEEP MY PERFECT PREP DAY & NIGHT?
The Perfect Prep should be kept in a cool dry location, avoiding direct sunlight and keeping away from warm appliances. This is recommended to avoid the tank temperature getting too warm. Don’t worry if your temperature warning indicator does appear as we have some tips for you in the answer below.
WHY CAN’T I MAKE A SMALLER FEED THAN A 4 OUNCE BOTTLE?
We’d love to accommodate and make a smaller feed, however in order to both dispense a hot shot at a high enough temperature to kill bacteria that may be present in the formula and then add enough cool filtered water to create the perfect temperature feed, 4oz is the smallest feed the Perfect Prep Day & Night can make.
Although we do not manufacture formula powder, we have looked at what the leading brands recommend and most assume that a 9lb+ baby will be on 4oz feeds. However, it’s difficult to recommend a "suitable from" age for the Perfect Prep Machines because every baby is different. Some are onto 4oz feeds within a couple of weeks whereas others may take longer.
MY TEMPERATURE WARNING KEEPS COMING ON AND I DON’T KNOW WHY. WHAT CAN I DO TO TURN THIS OFF?
The only time we would expect this warning to come on is during the cleaning mode, when you flush the machine with boiled water. Thereafter, you should only ever fill your machine with cold water from the tap.
The Perfect Prep Day & Night machine contains a probe that measures the temperature of the water in the tank which prevents the machine from dispensing if the water is above 25 C. This is a key safety feature to ensure that the final feed is not too hot for your baby. High water temperature should only ever be an issue in hotter climates, but it is not uncommon for mains water to rise in temperature in cooler climates during a sustained period of hot weather. We therefore recommend that the cold tap is flushed for 10 seconds before filling the tank.
Other preventative actions include:
1. keeping the machine out of direct sunlight
2. regularly topping up with cold tap water rather than letting a full machine stand and warm for long periods of time
3. keeping a cold jug of water in the fridge
HOW LONG CAN I LEAVE UNUSED WATER IN THE TANK?
Water is a food stuff, so we recommend using within 1-2 days. If water has been left in the hopper for longer, then please empty and refill before next use.
WHY IS THE AMOUNT OF FEED OVER OR UNDER THE LEVEL OF FEED I WAS EXPECTING?
As is normal with all manufactured products, the Perfect Prep Day & Night machine dispensed water volume has an allowed tolerance of +/- 5%. Additionally, there are potential tolerances in the measurement graduations of our Closer to Nature bottles.
This means that any volume below 100 ml may vary by +/- 5 ml, and any volume above 100 ml may vary by +/- 5%
It is therefore possible for the combination of both tolerances, machine and bottle, to make the volume dispensed by the machine appear inaccurate.
Our Closer to Nature bottles meet or surpass the requirements for volume tolerances as specified by European Standard EN 143
SOMETIMES WHEN I CHANGE THE WATER FILTER THERE ARE BLACK PARTICLES/ DUST ON THE CARTRIDGE. WHAT ARE THEY?
You may find that there’s a small residue of black carbon in the bag or on the surface of the cartridge; this can happen and it’s nothing to be concerned about. These dust particles are harmless and will be reduced during the initial set up process when submerging in clean fresh water. The carbon used in the filter is food grade certified and therefore poses no harm to your little one.
